City of Apopka Highlights for June 2022
Summer Camp Begins
The City was excited to kick off its inaugural summer camp season at Camp Wewa! This is the first camp program at the property since the City purchased Camp Wewa from the YMCA. This expanded the opportunities the City's Recreation Department could offer camp goers including archery, rock wall climbing, swimming, and kayaking at both their day and overnight camps currently being held throughout the summer.

Apopka Youth Works Program Starts
The City in partnership with the Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce and CareerSource Central Florida hosts a paid summer internship program for local high school students every year. The Apopka Youth Works Program started with a training week for students to learn important soft skills needed as part of their job experience. This summer, Apopka Youth Works has 140 students participating in the program.

Welcome Miss Apopka 2022
The City Council welcomed Victoria Sonza to the City as our new Miss Apopka for 2022. Victoria represented Apopka proudly at the Miss Florida Competition in late June.

Monsters in the Morning Host Hatchet Championship
The Monsters in the Morning, a talk radio show on WTKS-FM Real Radio 104.1, had their Monster Hatchet World Championship at our local ax throwing place here in Apopka. The Ax Hole and Three Odd Guys Brewing hosted the event and had a great turnout. If you haven't visited either establishment, be sure to check them out! They are located at 50 E. 5th Street and 48 E. 5th Street respectively.

Elks Lodge Honors Flag Day
Members of the Elks Lodge No. 2422 in Apopka honored Flag Day with a traditional ritual that is annually performed by all 2,000-plus Elks Lodges in the United States. The tradition has been followed by the Elks since 1908, to promote patriotism and respect for the American flag.

Commissioner Smith Inducted into Florida Future Farmers of America Hall of Fame
Congratulations to Commissioner Smith on his induction into the Florida Future Farmers of America Hall of Fame for his distinguished career as an agricultural teacher and Future Farmers of America advisor for over forty years.

A Day of Planting by the Apopka Chamber and Re-Imagine Communities
The Apopka Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Re-Imagine Communities hosted a Day of Planting at the Chamber featuring Marcus Bridgewater, celebrated author, social media influencer and Apopka native!

Governor Signs City of Apopka Legislation Designed to Bring Restaurants to the Area
Governor DeSantis signed a local bill into law geared toward attracting more restaurants to the downtown Apopka area. The legislation grants small restaurants located in the Apopka Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) District the authority to get a Special Food Service license for beer, wine and liquor. This incentive will help attract small restaurants to the downtown CRA area and provide a means for their long-term sustainability which benefits the community as a whole!

The City's Recreation Department hosted a free Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin Tribute Concert along with a Senior Wellness Expo for our senior citizens
